Job Description:
Perry Memorial Library is currently seeking an energetic, organized, and enthusiastic candidate to provide adult outreach and circulation support.
This position performs paraprofessional work in the circulation department of the Perry Memorial Library serving Vance County and the city of Henderson.
Work involves providing customer service and readers' advisory at the circulation desk, including but not limited to checking in and checking out materials, creating and maintaining new customer accounts, and accepting payment for fees.
Answers questions about library materials and customer accounts both in person and by phone.
Responsible for the library's adult outreach services, including delivery to homebound patrons and book stops at selected facilities.
Maintains reader profiles for homebound customers and manages delivery schedule.
Engages in the community, creates and maintains partnerships to enhance adult outreach services.
Reports to the Patron Services Librarian.
Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies:
Thorough knowledge of professional library principles, practices, and techniques.
Thorough knowledge of the operation practices of a public library and practices of library science including administration.
Thorough knowledge of reference, fiction, and nonfiction materials for variety of age groups.
Thorough knowledge of library-related technology, including automated library systems, standard computer programs, databases, and the internet.
General knowledge of cataloging trends and methods.
Knowledge of basic library marketing practices.
Ability to deal tactfully, courteously, and effectively with the public and other employees.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, volunteers, officials, and the public.
Ability to assist patrons in locating areas of the library collection pertinent to their needs.
Ability to conduct a successful reference interview and to assist patrons in meeting their informational and recreational needs.
Ability to develop or adapt evaluative instruments for assessing effectiveness of programs.
Ability to prepare reports or other informational devices for the Library Director.
Ability to act as an advocate of public library information educational services to the community in general.
Ability to plan own work flow and set priorities.
Ability to train staff to select materials, access information online, and perform basic reference/readers' advisory work.
Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment.
Ability to present ideas orally and in writing.
Ability to supervise assigned staff and act in the absence of the Library Director.
Ability to schedule/plan, produce and conduct workshops/continuing education opportunities for library staff members.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities KSA:
Graduation from high school or equivalent Valid North Carolina driver's license Significant and relevant experience providing public/customer service Knowledge of public library services and technologies Computing skills including familiarity across operating systems and fluency with all office applications Ability to meet high service standards in all interactions (in-person, by telephone, via e-mail or online) Application Special Instructions Weekend and evening hours are required.
